About Ukraine

The Country of Ukraine

Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe, and only smaller in size than Russia. It is divided into 24 administrative regions and an Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The country lies in the Dniper River basin, washed by Black and Azov Seas, and has borders with Russia, Moldavia, Romania, Poland, Belorussia, Slovakia and Hungary.

Forested land occupies about 19.8 million acres, and much of this has been planted. Most of the forests are in the Carpathians, but there are woodlands in the steppes and in the ravines and gorges of the Dnepr Plateau. There are also nearly 3000 rivers that flow through Ukraine.

The largest part of Ukraine is mainly flat. 95% of its territory is occupied by plains and only 5% by mountains. The Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains (the highest point is Mountain Goverla, at 2061 meters) are situated near the western borders of the country, and the Crimean Mountains are situated in the extreme south of Ukraine.

The area of Ukraine is 603,700 sq km (slightly smaller than Texas) and with a population of about 48 million (urban 30%, rural 70%). About half the rural population lives in villages having from 1,000 to 5,000 inhabitants. Approximately 85% of the Ukrainian population are Orthodox Christians; 10% are Catholics of the Byzantine rite; 3% are Protestant; 1.3% are of the Jewish faith.

Cities and Nature

The capital, the main administrative centre and the largest city of Ukraine is Kiev. One of the most wonderful and ancient cites in Europe, with a splendid and interesting history, with great nature, picturesque streets and buildings. A beautiful river that divides the city in two parts, and then flows to the Black Sea. It stands at the crossroads of major internal and translational railways, highways and air lines.

Other great and important cities of Ukraine are Kharkov, Donetsk, Denpropetpovsk, Lvov, Lugansk and sunny Odessa. We should not forget about Crimea with its unique nature, mountains, canyons and great seaside! The Crimea is an excellent health resort, and an ideal place for rest and recreation.

The conservation of plants and animal life has been given high priority for most of the 20th century. Ukraine has several protected forests and game reserves. The largest of these is the Askaniya-Nova reserve. Established in 1921 to protect the natural vegetation, it covers 25,900 acres.

There are about 40 different types of mammals that have been introduced there as part of a program to protect endangered species. There is great variety of wildlife that can be found here; including, wolf, bear, lynx, wild boar, beaver, marten, elk, weasel, and badger, with many different variaties of birds and fish. In the south is a Black Sea reserve covering 90,400 acres. Its main attraction is waterfowl. The Nikitsky Botanical Garden near the city of Yalta is known for its plants from almost every country in the world.

Climate and Language

Climate in Ukraine is mostly temperate continental, but there is subtropical climate of Mediterranean type on the southern Crimean costs. The change of seasons is very distinct in Ukraine: hot dry summer with bright sun, cold and snowy winter; the warm spring actually starts in April, with marvellous displays of flowers in parks, gardens, and all over the city. Ukraine is very beautiful in autumn, but can be rainy towards the winter.

The official state language is Ukrainian, an Eastern Slavonic language written in Cyrillic script. But a lot of people speak Russian as well. In Kiev and in the Eastern Ukraine Russian is more widely in use.

The Ukrainian flag is composed of two equal horizontal bands of azure and yellow colors. It represents ripe wheat growing under the blue sky. The official coat of arms of Ukraine is a golden trident on an azure background.

Agriculture and Industry

ukraine_6.jpgUkraine has an excellent soil for agriculture. In past centuries the majority of Ukrainians were farmers by profession, and the country was known as the "breadbasket" of the Russian Empire, and of the Soviet Union thanks to its fertile black earth. It grows wheat, buckwheat, maize and other corn; red and green vegetables, fruit of all kinds, including melons and berries. Ukraine is one of the world's main centres of sugar production. It produces sugar both for her own needs, and for export.

Our country is rich in various minerals such as coal, iron ores, gas, oil, stone, salt etc. The nature of Ukraine has created a rich raw-material base for the development of metallurgical, chemical, porcelain, ceramics and building materials manufacturing.

The Donetsk Basin which is situated near the border with Russia, contains huge reserves of coal and an extensive concentration of heavy industry. Ukraine has a third of the former Soviet Union's heavy industry, and two-thirds of its coal. The country has a very good strategic position at the crossroads between Europe and Asia. Our major trading partners are: Russia, China, Turkey, Germany, Belarus, US, Poland, and Italy.

Meet new Friends in Ukraine

The time difference in Ukraine is 2 hours ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time. On the 24th of August Ukrainians celebrate Independence Day. The national currency of Ukraine is hryvna. The widespread foreign currencies are the US dollar and Euro.

Ukraine is a country that can offer you a lot of great, and new and interesting things that you will not find in any other place. It is a marvelous place for an enjoyable and fascinating vacation, for business trips, meeting new friends, or just for a relaxing vacation!
